Craniosacral Therapy FAQ

Live Less Out of Habit and More Out of Intent

If you have never heard of CranioSacral therapy or just want to know more about it, take a look at the FAQs below to learn more.

  • CranioSacral Therapy, (CST) is a holistic, total body approach to patient care. Our daily lives are filled with stress, good and bad, physical and mental. Our bodies absorb that stress, creating tensions within the tissues that effect our muscles, nerves, organs, and eventually our overall health.
Our bodies were made to heal themselves. CranioSacral Therapy promotes a positive change in your body, returning it to a state where it can function at its best, naturally fighting off disease, eliminating pain, and managing the stress (physical and mental) of everyday life.

The CranioSacral System is made up of protective layers of soft-tissue and fluid that nourish the brain and spinal cord, along with the vertebral column and the skull. The integrity of this system plays an integral role in the function of your central nervous system, which in turn, has a relationship with every other system in your entire body. Because of this close relationship, CranioSacral Therapy has the ability to enhance your overall health and well-being.

Through gentle light touch, the practitioner monitors the integrity of your CranioSacral System. When restrictions are found, they are released through the skilled light touch techniques of the therapist, allowing tensions deep within the tissues to relax and your body to begin to self-correct and heal.

  • Life is full of stressors. They can be good or bad, physical or mental. Often, we carry this stress in our bodies and eventually it begins to have a negative impact on our overall health. The amazing thing about CranioSacral Therapy is that it has the ability to improve your overall health and wellness by releasing the restrictions and tensions in your soft-tissue. This enhances your body’s ability to heal from and fight off illness, disease, and dysfunction including, but not limited to:

    • Orthopedic Problems
    • Neck and Back Pain
    • Migraines and Headaches
    • Increased Stress and Tension / Sympathetic Dominance

  • A CranioSacral Therapy treatment session takes place in a private, peaceful setting, lasting about one hour. The initial appointment will begin by taking a patient history, discussing patient goals, and completing a patient evaluation.

The patient remains fully clothed for the treatment session. Treatment will begin by the patient relaxing on a padded table in a position of comfort. The therapist will begin by evaluating their CranioSacral Rhythm using gentle light touch. Through the advanced palpation skills of the therapist, restrictions are felt and then released using skilled light touch techniques. The gentle touch of CST prevents a defense response or tensing up of the body, allowing the patient to remain in a relaxed state throughout the entire treatment session.

What a patient experiences during a treatment session is extremely individualized, depending on what their body needs that day. In general, patients report feelings of extreme relaxation upon completion of a session. Over the hours and days following the treatment session, patients will report an improvement in symptoms, such as increased energy, decreased pain, decreased stress, improved sleep, and many more positive changes indicating that their bodies are moving toward a state of improved health and wellness.
